Energy Conservation Tips

The first step to lower energy bills and energy independence is energy conservation. You can reduce your energy bill by as much as 50% just by implementing a few energy conservation tips.

Here are just a few energy conservation tips that you can apply to your every day life and save energy:

  • Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light lamps. Compact fluorescent light lamps will initially cost more but have a much longer life span.

  • Turn off the lights in rooms that are not being used. Install motion sensor lights outside so that lights are only turned on when they are needed.

  • When possible hang laundry outdoors to air dry. Use the cool cycle on your clothes dryer if you must use the dryer.

  • Take shorter showers. This will save you both energy and water.

  • Wash your laundry in cold water. Only wash clothes when you have a full load of laundry.

  • Use your microwave oven more often instead of using your stove oven.

  • Turn off your computers, TVs, radios and stereos if you're not using them. Better yet, unplug unused electrical items. Energy is still being used for an item that is turned off but still plugged in.

  • Insulate windows, doors, ceilings, floors and walls to stop warmth from escaping or heat from entering your house. Less electricity will be needed for cooling and heating.

  • Wrap an insulation coat around your hot water system and it's pipes.

  • Buy energy efficient appliances when you have to replace an existing appliance such as fridges, washing machines, clothes dryers, dishwashers and electric stoves.
